One way that I have found is to momentarily save the session of the GUEST and restart it through the desktop enviroment by using either the VirtualBox interface or the VBoxSDL. that was one of the nice things of vmware server 1 - being able to open and close the console window without killing the guest. A problem that I have with VirtualBox is how to begin a X11-desktop session on the HOST with GUEST machines that are started automatically using the VBoxHeadless command. I'm sure we had a feature request to enable switching between gui and headless mode, it never made it into 3.2 it seems. i moved to virtualbox as soon as server2 went into beta as i hated that web interface that was slow as molasses and used 200mb+ of ram and meant running another service on the host, plus that windows-centric browser plugin for the gui was just rubbish, vmware wouldn't listen to its users, they just had an agenda to make server2 a migration path to esx. If you don't want to use the puel license for its vrdp, you can just use regular rdp/vnc from the guest if you are using bridged networking. If you have x11 on the guest (seems odd on win2008?) then of course you can just use ssh forwarding.
